In reading through the articles on nutrition in this issue I notice that many of the writers
stress the
importance of drinking plenty of clean, pure water. This is, of course, nothing new as we have
heard the advice many times that we need the equivalent of eight glasses of water each day.
I recently came across a book called "Messages From Water" by Masaru Emoto. It
may be one of the most important books I've ever read . . . or more accurately that I've ever seen
as it's primarily a book of photographs. I planned to do an article on the book in the Summer
2002 issue of the magazine with several other articles on the accumulating scientific evidence
supporting the existence of Qi energy, but the concept seems to apply to this issue so I'll
introduce some of the ideas here and also do the article in the Summer.
Masaru Emoto is a Japanese researcher who developed a machine for photographing water as it
changes form from a solid to a liquid. For a brief point in the melting process water takes a
crystalline form much like a snowflake. The images he photographs of pure water are absolutely
beautiful, like crystal diamonds.
Emoto intended to use the photographs to show the difference between pure and polluted water
as contaminated water does not take a crystal form, is misshapen and quite ugly. The contrasting
photos canbe used as visual evidence to convince people of the need to stop polluting the water
supply and as an indicator of improvements as they are made. A picture makes a stronger impact
than reports and numbers. Consequently Emoto set out to photograph bodies of water all over
Japan and then expanded to sources around the world. He found that, like snowflakes, no two
images were exactly the same. Although photos taken from the same sample were similar they
were not identical.
Marveling at the beauty and variety Emoto and his researchers began experimenting further.
Setting samples of distilled water between two speakers they played different types of music,
then photographed the results. This is similar to studies done with plants. The results showed
dramatic differences for classical pieces, new age music, folk songs and heavy metal. With the
latter the crystalline form is broken into pieces.
The next step was to speak to the water. Again like plants there was a positive image from
sending positive messages and a negative image from negative messages. It was as if the water
understood and reflected back to the viewer; as if the water held a consciousness as Emoto came
to believe. From speaking the researchers moved to writing messages on paper, attaching them to
the water samples for a period of time and then taking photographs. Again the water reacted very
differently to 'thank you', 'you make me sick', 'angel', 'devil', 'Adolph Hitler' and 'Mother Teresa'.
The water crystals were beautiful or distorted as expected.
Additional experiments sent distant energy healing or prayed over polluted water turning it from
distorted to healthy. In one experiment a priest prays over a polluted reservoir purifying the
water. That experiment is repeated around the world with students with some success wherever
Emoto lectures. His books (there are currently two volumes) contain the results of his studies for
all to see. Other researchers, some in the U.S., will soon have the equipment to duplicate and
expand on his work.
What are the implications of the study relative to the articles in this issue of the magazine? Our
bodies are 70 percent water. Every cell, every system in our body contains water. That water is
sensitive to sound, energy and thought. The effect of mind and spirit on the body has now been
photographed. The effect of positive and negative thoughts and words on the body have now
been photographed. The effect of prayer on the body has now been photographed. Placing the
body in a negative environment with loud noise, abusive words, a poor self-image, dirty air and
contaminated food will change the structure of the water in our bodies. I don't know the
biological mechanism by which the structure of the water relates to our immune system, but I
have no trouble believing there is a direct connection.
We already knew there was a strong connection between good health and a good environment
and wholesome food. But now you have visual evidence to show friends and family that Reiki
works, that prayer works, that verbal abuse is harmful, that working or playing in a bad
environment is unhealthy, that a positive self image changes the body. Now you know why we
bless our food before meals - it purifies it. Now you know that 'holy water' really has special
properties. And why placing someone in a healing circle - whether in body or in thought - can
heal. We can begin to understand how our thoughts manifest. And if a large enough group prays
for world peace it will happen. The possibilities and implications are endless. The idea Masaru
Emoto puts forth in his beautiful book is empowering. What can't we do?
And now you know why it is necessary to drink plenty of pure, clean water to cleanse and
replenish your body, to reflect in your cells the beautiful crystal that you are.
The "Messages From Water" books are just a beginning and will leave you with
more questions than they answer. You will think of a hundred experiments you wish they had
tried. You cannot buy the books in Connecticut. The best source I have found is a Japanese
bookstore in New York City. Kinokuniya Bookstores, (212) 765-7766, at 10 West 49th Street
will mail copies for $26.95 plus postage.
You will find many of the pictures at the following websites:

Now go drink a big tall glass of water - and remember to bless it.
